Our Environment

Our Environment

Humankind has relied on the environment for millennia; however, in the present day, we are forgetting this. As ungrateful as this is, it is happening. We are destroying our most valuable resource... nature. The Amazon Rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world is being cleared out. Over 20% is already gone, and it is estimated that 20000 square miles are being cleared out each year.

If we don't do something the world will end. In the year 2008, Walt Disney released a movie called Wall-E. This is based in the year 2805, where a robot named Wall-E is left to clean up Earth, till it is habitable again, while the humans cruise around in space in a giant space ship, named the Axiom. However humans did not leave Earth in that year, they left 700 years before that, in the year 2105. The cleanup program, 'Operation Cleanup', was supposed to only take 5 years. However, it did not go as well as expected. This is what will happen in real life to us, but not in the year 2105, but in a few years from now.

Our environment is being polluted by plastic and is being destroyed by people who cut down trees to either clear land or to make furniture, without regrowing the trees that have been cut down before. We also throw away recyclable and reusable materials, into landfill. This makes landfills bigger and pollutes the environment all around them.

How can we stop this? That is one of the most basic questions that a lot of us ask ourselves. Why is this basic? Well, that too is an easy question to answer, because we can stop this, without moving out of our comfort zones, or changing our daily routine. These are simple but effective methods that will help us prevent the future that the Earth is currently destined to have. Some of these methods are:
  • Growing a garden
This will not only help the environment but it will also help cool down your homes and your living environments. Growing a garden also helps to improve your mental health. Research shows that gardeners tend to have better life satisfaction, than the average human being. It will also help improve your self-esteem, and it will reduce the amount of stress and depression you may feel. It will also help increase the amount of oxygen in our environment, while at the same time reducing the amount of carbon dioxide.
  • Reduce ♻️
It is quite easy for us to reduce the amount of plastic that we use in our everyday lives. The best way to reduce the large amount of plastic that we use every day is to check the products with plastic packaging for better alternatives with less or no plastic in their packaging.
  • Reusing Items ♻️
We should reuse everyday items like plastic bags, handed out at supermarkets and at shopping centres. These bags make up a vast majority of landfills. We can reduce the amount of plastic bags in landfills, by reusing them. We should also reuse plastic bottles that can be brought at supermarkets, they also create a large percentage of most landfills. The same goes for paper coffee cups that your coffee comes in at coffee shops and other places where coffee can be bought. Don't let the word 'paper' fool you, as the layer that keeps the coffee from leaking in coffee cups are bad for the environment. We should reuse coffee cups, or take our own coffee cup when buying coffee. Some coffee stores in countries such as Australia may give discounts of up to 50 cents if you bring your own coffee cup.
  • Recycling, Recyclable Items ♻️
Most things that we use in our everyday lives can be recycled, even though we may not realize this. Some soft plastics, foil and any type of plastic, that when crushed and released reforms its shape, can be recycled. Most people (including myself till recently), may not know this, as we are led to believe that plastic cannot be recycled. However, this is incorrect, as some plastics can be. Anything with the recyclable icon ♻️ on them can be recycled. You can find this icon on the back of a lot of packaging.

We must heal our wounded environment. The methods listed above are some of the best ways to heal the environment.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle ♻️
